Private jet charter and flights to Bhutan

The tiny Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan lies on the Himalayas’ eastern edge, tucked between China and India. Known locally as the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’, Bhutan’s monasteries (there are over 10,000 religious monuments here), forested slopes and snow-capped peaks have long been a secret to foreign visitors. Shrouded in mystery, this deeply spiritual nation was off-limits to tourists until the 1970s. Bhutan strives to retain its strong traditions while sensitively adopting modern changes in technology (in 1999, it became the last country on the planet to permit television) and sustainable tourism. Bhutan is the only country in the world to measure its Gross National Happiness and it’s a privilege to experience this unique outlook on life.

Capital city Thimphu is a sleepy enclave where the country’s customs and traditions can be seen in full swing, with locals in national dress making their way to work or chatting at weekend markets. On the banks of the Thimphu River you’ll find excellent examples of Bhutanese architecture with monasteries, chortens (stupas) and dzongs (fortress-like structures) such as the splendid Tashichho Dzong, which contains the King’s throne room and offices. Thimphu is Bhutan’s only proper city; over two-thirds of the country’s population live in rural villages that are often a few hours on foot from the nearest road.

It’s the mountains that call many travellers to Bhutan, where snow-capped peaks rise above ancient forests. Bhutan is carbon neutral and the law dictates that around two-thirds of the country must remain forested for future generations. The result is wonderfully pristine hillsides that are perfect for trekking. The gruelling Snowman Trek – which takes a whopping 25 days to complete and reaches one of the Himalayas’ most remote valleys – is the most famous route, but the majority of trekkers opt for day walks that still showcase the awe-inspiring mountain views. Popular spots include the quiet town of Paro, set deep within a lovely valley in the shadow of the eastern Himalayas. Here you’ll find Bhutan’s most photographed attraction: the beautiful Paro Taktsang monastery, or 'Tiger’s Nest', which perches precariously on a sheer cliff-side above the town.

Bhutan’s unique approach to life and tourism means there are a few concepts travellers should take note of. Trips here are carefully arranged to include all your meals, transport, fees and sightseeing with a local tour guide, as well as your accommodation. Food in Bhutan is hspicy – chillis are a staple of almost every dish and national dish ema datshi is a fiery blend of chillis and a local cheese. Perhaps surprisingly, there’s a great choice of high-end boutique hotels from big-name luxury brands like COMO, Taj and Amankora.

When chartering a flight to Bhutan from outside of the country, you’ll fly into Paro Airport – the nation’s only international airport. Other airports in Bhutan that are suitable for a variety of private jets include the small domestic airport of Yongphulla and Gelephu Airport, which came into regular use in 2017.
