French Polynesia is made up of five groups of islands, the Society Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands, with 118 islands and atolls in total. Of those 118, only 67 are inhabited, though many are utilised by tourists for day trips or as a place to anchor for the night. Bora Bora and Tahiti are probably the best known of the Society Islands, with the former found in the Leeward Islands, whilst the latter is within the Windward.

Bora Bora is probably the most iconic island within French Polynesia, with its azure lagoon, sweeping beaches and volcanic peaks used in countless films and advertisements. Many say Bora Bora is as close to paradise as you can get on earth. With French Polynesia you’ll also find the popular islands of Moorea, Raiatea and Taha’a amongst others.

Tahiti is the largest island within French Polynesia and also the most populated. It is split into two pieces, Tahiti Nui, which is the largest north western section, and Tahiti Iti, the smaller south eastern section. You’ll find the capital, Pape’ete, on the northern section and nearby Faa’a is where you’ll find the biggest airport in French Polynesia. Tahiti itself is home to a plethora of resorts many, such as the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, and also plenty of markets where you can buy local souvenirs such as black pearls, or carvings.

The other groups of islands are much lesser visited when it comes to numbers, but most will still be home to a luxury resort or two. Equally there are plenty of yachts and small cruise ships that island hop, allowing visitors to get a real taste of French Polynesia, from deserted atolls and flourishing coral reefs, to luxurious overwater bungalows and sprawling resorts.

When it comes to passing the time, practically every island will offer a beautiful stretch of beach and hopefully some reef. Aside from sunbathing, there’s plenty of opportunity for snorkelling, and diving is also very popular, with plenty of sea life such as sharks and manta rays to spot. You can also do village visits, and browse local markets for local handicrafts.

French Polynesia isn’t easy to get to and chartering by private jet is a far more straightforward way to explore this beautiful area of the world.
