Most travellers flock to Tanzania for its world-class wildlife, and many make a beeline for the vast savannah of the Serengeti and its ‘northern circuit’ neighbours: the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire. Bordering Kenya’s Maasai Mara, the Serengeti is ultimate safari country and from November to July each year the Great Migration herds thunder across its plains, leaving clouds of dust in their wake. This annual event is the largest mass movement of land mammals on Earth.

But there’s more to the Serengeti than the migration and it offers excellent wildlife viewing year-round. This is renowned big cat territory, where prides of lion laze in the shade, solo leopards lie camouflaged in trees, and cheetah stalk their prey at speeds of up to 120km/h. The other members of the Big Five (rhino, African elephant and Cape buffalo) can all be spotted here, too. Some of Tanzania’s most exclusive camps and lodges are in the Serengeti, so after a day out in the bush you can look forward to sleeping under the stars in a plush tented suite, soaking in a deep tub with a glass of fizz, or even indulging in a massage out in the wilderness.

It’s easy to combine the Serengeti with another of Tanzania’s key attractions: the Ngorongoro Crater. This unique landscape was created by the collapse of a volcano over two million years ago and today the crater is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the crater rim, it’s a 600m drop to the floor, where diverse wildlife includes lion, rhino and hippo. Ngorongoro is deservedly popular, so you’ll want to rise early to make sure you’re in one of the first vehicles to venture down into the crater. After a day’s game viewing, there are some great lodges with spectacular sunset views to retire to on the crater rim.

Tanzania has something for experienced safari-goers, too. The secluded southern parks of Selous and Ruaha are far quieter than the big names of the northern circuit, offering off-the-beaten-track adventures with walking safaris and boat trips as well as traditional game drives. Away from the country’s national parks, you can also visit Maasai villages to gain an insight into the local way of life and shop for hand-made curios, and discover Olduvai Gorge – one of the world’s most significant archaeological sites. For a literally breathtaking experience, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a popular charity fundraiser and bucket-list staple. There are multiple ascent routes and it takes around a week to summit, but the reward is the huge sense of achievement at having reached the ‘roof of Africa’.

And then there are the beaches. Offshore from mainland Tanzania, just a short flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam, exotic Zanzibar is known as ‘Spice Island’. Its capital, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to an enchanting labyrinth of narrow streets and historic weathered buildings, but the island’s biggest draw is its coastline. Zanzibar’s white-sand beaches are up there with the best in the world and a stay here is all about enjoying world-class accommodation – there are an impressive number of luxe hotels considering the island’s size – relaxing in the sunshine and exploring the vibrant underwater world on snorkelling and diving trips.

Tempted by Tanzania? Instead of transferring from an international airport to start your Serengeti safari, charter a private jet straight to the smaller Arusha Airport. Or fly to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for a relaxing break in Zanzibar. Chat to one of our experts, who can arrange all you need to charter a private jet to Tanzania.
