French Open

The French Open is the only Grand Slam tournament played on a clay court, often considered to be the most physically demanding surface in the sport. The tournament originated in 1891 as the members-only French Championships. The French Tennis Federation opened the championship to foreign players in 1925. Now, the tournament is often referred to as “Roland Garros” after the famous French aviator for whom the host stadium is named.

Wimbledon

Often considered to be the most celebrated of all the Grand Slam tournaments, Wimbledon is an essential event for any tennis fan, fervent or casual. With a history dating back to 1877, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and the only to be played on grass courts. The first tournament was attended by roughly 200 spectators, all of whom paid one shilling each to watch the final match.

U.S. Open

The final Grand Slam of the season, the U.S. Open in New York City sees the highest attendance of all, with nearly 700,000 spectators annually. The tournament first came to life in 1881 as the U.S. National Singles Championship at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. Today, the U.S. Open is played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, which has hosted the tournament each year since 1978.
